Ellora Caves – Introduction (UNESCO-World Heritage Site):

Ellora Caves – The Hindu, Jain and Buddhist caves carved in the volcanic rocks at Ellora are among the finest in India. Rock-cut architecture in the Western Ghats reached its glorious last phase here at Ellora, with large-scale figure sculpture, complex compositions, and a wide range of iconographic schemes. Here you can wander the long, west-facing basalt escarpment, quietly soaking up the spirit of this place that has been sacred to Buddhists, Jains and Hindus for many centuries.

During the 7th century, for some unknown reason, the focus of activity shifted from Ajanta to a place known today as Ellora. Unlike the cave temples at Ajanta, those of Ellora are not solely Buddhist. Instead, they follow the development of religious thought in India through the decline of Buddhism in the latter half of 8th century, the Hindu renaissance that followed the return of Gupta dynasty, and the Jain resurgence between the 9th and 11th centuries. Of the 34 Caves, the 12 to the south are Buddhist, the 17 in the centre are Hindu, and the 5 to the north are Jain.

At Ellora caves the focus is on sculpture, which covers the walls in ornate masses. The carvings in the Buddhist caves are serene, but in the Hindu caves they take on a certain exuberance and vitality – gods and demons. The Jain caves are Ellora’s swan song. Like the caves at Ajanta, Ellora caves were also abandoned and forgotten. Most caves at Ellora have courtyards in front.
