Panhala or Panhalgad is located at about 19 kms north-west of Kolhapur and at an altitude of about 950 m. This is an enchanting place, peaceful, pollution free, and scenic enough to overwhelm your senses. Possibly it is the largest and most important fort of the Deccan. Roughly triangular in shape, it has a perimeter of approximately 7.25 kms. Half of its length is protected by a natural scarp reinforced by a parapet wall and the balance half is surrounded by a strong stone wall strengthened with bastions.

This fort is strategically located looking over a pass in the Sahyadri mountain range. Because of its strategic location, it was the centre of several fights in the Deccan involving the Marathas, the Mughals and the British. Here, the queen regent of Kolhapur, Tarabai, spent her constructive years.

Panhala Fort forms the largest of all the Deccan forts, carrying a rich heritage,. This is the only fort where the great ruler, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is believed to have spent more than 500 days.

The fort had three magnificent double walled gates, out of which two gates have survived. The Teen Darwaza (three doors) to the west is an powerful structure. The Teen Darwaza “three door” gate meant successive doors that could only be approached at an awkward angle, trapping troops in the inner courtyard and making it impossible to charge. There are a number of ruined monuments within the fort. The most impressive among them are the three huge granaries. In the north-east corner there is a double story building, called Sajja Kothi, where Shivaji had confined his errant son, Sambhaji.

This place offers mesmerizing views of the nearby valleys. The land is an ideal trekking destination too.
